...gone to look for America

A diary of a thirty-day odyssey across America in May 2014, eschewing all interstate highways in favor of secondary roads through small towns and villages.

Friday, May 16 - Reno To Burney CA

5/17/2014

We took a roundabout way to get out of Reno today. We wanted to head to Carson City and Lake Tahoe, but got somewhat sidetracked to Virginia City. (I know...us get sidetracked...hard to believe, huh?) Virginia City is kind of a touristy little place at the top of a big mountain, and we really weren't too interested. But then we ran into this chocolate factory...and the sign said "free samples." Khrysso just couldn't seem to stop the car from turning right into the parking lot. It was a fun place full of all kinds of yummy stuff. We indulged. And we meet a fun lady, Trudy. Here's a picture...
Next we headed to Lake Tahoe, not intending to spend much time, but just wanted to see the lake. It is very beautiful, as you can see.
We had lunch in Truckee, and then thought we might head to Susanville and spend the night there on our way to Oregon, but found when we got there that we still had a little drive stamina in us, so checked in with the local police (a particularly brilliant idea of Khrysso's) for advice on which direction to head. That took us to Burney, on the way to Mount Shasta. We drove there by way of the Lassen National Forest, a particularly beautiful and peaceful place, especially at dusk. We logged a lot of miles today!

I absolutely LOVE Lake Tahoe. I once saw a cabin on a spit of land that jutted out into the lake and thought it would be the most wonderful place to live.

I was in Truckee over 40 years ago. Bet it hasn't changed too much. Glad to see the trip has been what you had hoped it would be. There was a folk festival in Kirtland, OH today my cousin went attended. The Blue Sky Folk Fest....right up your alley. Maybe next year.
One of the kindergartners asked me how old I am the other day. I said, "Gettin' up there and that's all you need to know." To which he replied, "Are you about 39?"
"Yep," I said, "about that."

Keep on truckin' Look forward to more stories and pics!
