Well, this has to be one of my favorite days so far. On the schedule was to visit the Golden Spike National Historic Site, which commemorates the spot where the train crews from the west and from the east met, thereby completing the Transcontinental Railroad. That was interesting, but not my primary reason for wanting to be there. What I had been looking forward to for months was the chance to see an art installation called the Spiral Jetty, an earthwork that extends out into the lake. It's quite an adventure just getting to it...fifteen miles of unpaved, unattended road to the Bay where Robert Smithson created his most famous work. It Is Incredible! I first learned of this in the art class I took last Fall, and I guess you could say it was on my bucket list. I was very excited to be here.
After leaving, reluctantly, the Spiral Jetty, we set out for Nevada. Incredible landscapes through this part of the country. Wide open spaces full of sagebrush, with cattle ranging, and everywhere the mountains standing sentinel with their snow capped peaks gleaming in the sun.
We pulled into Elko around dinnertime, and took a room at the Red Lion Casino! Tomorrow will be on to Reno where a hope to see our UU friends, Brad and Kate Taylor.
