...gone to look for America

A diary of a thirty-day odyssey across America in May 2014, eschewing all interstate highways in favor of secondary roads through small towns and villages.

Wednesday, May 21 - On to Yellowstone

5/21/2014

We spent the morning exploring downtown Missoula. I like that town! Lots of art galleries and cute shops and quirky cafes. Also the home of Montana University which contributes to the culture. Good energy here.

Then we headed out towards Butte, which we were told was also a pretty progressive town. It's got some things going for it, but not a much fun as Missoula, so we didn't stay long.

One of the highlights of the day was lunch in a little Podunk town called Drummond, at Parkers Cafe. They have over 100 different hamburgers! And none of them are turkey or veggie! The special today was lamb burger.  You can take the Parker Challenge -- that's their 2 pound hamburger, one pound of French fries, and a large milkshake. If you can eat that in twenty minutes, it's on the house. Oh, did I mention that the milkshake was 32 ounces? So, how many people have done it, I asked. Well, it seems that 59 have tried it so far and only 12 have succeeded. It's the milkshake that gets 'em, they say, and it ain't pretty. I can only imagine. This kitschy place must have every single piece of Coca Cola memorabilia in existence. And of course the only serve Coke products. The Frosty Freeze next door has a big sign that proclaims that they serve Pepsi products. I sense a rivalry. If you want to know anything about what happens when your cattle get out of the gate, or get caught up on next Thursday's horse auction, then this is your place. By the way, food was great!
We're spending tonight in West Yellowstone, and hope to see a bit of it tomorrow before moving on through Wyoming.

You guys are really "haulin' " as they say out there on the road. What a great trip. Still haven't made it to Yellowstone and now you're reminding I have to get that done.
